Meaning of the Devotion

• Venerated, Not Adored: Catholics honor Mary’s physical heart because it connects to her person and her deep love for God. The Faithful adore only God.
• The Two Hearts: The Sacred Heart of Jesus represents divine love. The Immaculate Heart of Mary represents the perfect human response to that love.

History and Context

• Pope Pius XII: In 1944, Pope Pius XII set a feast day for the Immaculate Heart on August 22 to pray for peace during World War II.
• Calendar Changes: The specific liturgical feast day was later moved.   The Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is celebrated annually on the Saturday following the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, exactly the third Saturday after Pentecost. This movable memorial typically falls in June.
• Fatima Connection: The devotion grew strongly after the visions at Fatima, where Mary asked for prayers, and the Five First Saturdays practice to make amends for sins against her heart.
